Maintenance Procedure for High-Pressure Screw Air Compressors
1. The ultimate purpose of periodic maintenance for high-pressure screw air compressors
For Fiber Laser cutting machines, clean and dry compressed air is a “vital” factor. Maintenance is not merely about keeping the machine running, but serves 3 strategic goals:
-
Absolute protection of the Laser source and Cutting torch: Preventing oil vapor and water from entering, which can fog lenses, burn cutting nozzles, or damage internal gas mixers.
-
Ensuring cut quality: Compressed air free of impurities ensures bright, slag-free (dross-free) cuts and stable cutting speeds.
-
Energy optimization (VFD): Ensuring the inverter and mechanical systems operate smoothly, minimizing power loss and avoiding overheating errors during high-pressure operation.

2. Importance of periodic inspection and replacement of consumables
Screw air compressors used for laser cutting machines often operate at high intensity and pressure, causing oil and filters to degrade faster than standard air compressors.
2.1. Air Filter (Intake Filter) – The “Lungs” of the system
-
Function: Removes environmental dust and contaminants before they enter the compression chamber.
-
Importance: Fine dust is the leading cause of screw wear and oil contamination.
-
Recommendation: Clean weekly with compressed air. Replace after 1,000 – 1,500 hours of operation (or sooner in dusty environments).

2.2. Oil Filter – Protecting the Airend
-
Function: Filters out impurities and metal shavings from the lubricating oil.
-
Importance: Keeps the microscopic clearances between the two screws clean, preventing rotor seizure or surface scratches.
-
Recommendation: Replace periodically every 2,000 hours.

2.3. Air/Oil Separator – Determines output air quality
-
Function: Separates fine oil mist from the compressed air.
-
Importance: This is the most critical component for laser machines. If the separator fails, oil travels directly into the pipeline, destroying the cutting torch lens system.
-
Recommendation: Replace after 3,000 – 4,000 hours. Always check the pressure differential (replace immediately if it exceeds 0.8 bar).

2.4. High-Pressure Screw Air Compressor Oil
-
Role: Lubrication, sealing, and most importantly, cooling. At 16 bar pressure, the compression temperature rises very rapidly.
-
Recommendation: Use high-temperature resistant synthetic oil. Change the oil every 4,000 hours to prevent oil oxidation and varnish buildup.
3. Maintenance Schedule for Laser Air Compressors
| Phase | Work Content | Benefits |
| Daily | Check oil level, drain water from auto-drain valves. | Early detection of leaks, ensuring dry air. |
| Weekly | Clean radiators/coolers, air filters, and check motor current. | Avoid overheating errors, protect the inverter (VFD). |
| 1,000 – 2,000h | Replace air and oil filters, check belt tension/couplings. | Maintain compression efficiency, protect the airend. |
| 3,000 – 4,000h | Replace oil separator, change oil, clean intake valve. | Eliminate oil vapor in air, protect the laser torch. |
| 8,000h (Overhaul) | Replace minimum pressure valve kit, thermostat valve, motor grease. | Stabilize system pressure, control temperature. |
4. Outstanding benefits of following the maintenance procedure
For the operator
-
Stable pressure: Prevents the machine from stopping abruptly due to “Low Air Pressure” errors.
-
Easy diagnosis: Periodic inspections help early detection of bearing wear or inverter issues through vibration and current analysis.
For the manufacturing plant:
-
Perfect cut quality: Clean air produces smooth cuts that require no rework, saving time and material costs.
-
Protection of high-value assets: The cost of replacing a lens set or laser source is many times higher than the annual maintenance cost of the air compressor.
-
Energy savings: A well-maintained compressor with clean filters reduces internal pressure drops, optimizing the energy-saving features of the Variable Speed Drive (VSD).
5. Technical Safety Notes (LOTO)
Before maintenance, it is mandatory to perform the Lockout/Tagout procedure:
-
Disconnect the main power supply and lock the electrical cabinet.
-
Close the air outlet valve and bleed the pressure in the oil tank to 0 PSI.
-
Wait for the machine to cool down completely before opening filter caps or draining oil.
